Some Problems Concerning Rock Mechanics of Low Strength Materials

Abstract

After defining low strength rock, the author briefly sums up the deformability and strength behaviour of low strength rocks and of rock masses made up of such rocks.

Regarding low strength continuous surfaces, the probabilistic nature of their occurrence is indicated and the need to improve the methods for detecting them and for characterizing their shear strength is emphasized.
