Abstract

The article mentions the finite element method used nowadays in the design of tunnels and other underground excavations.

Some considerations are made on the finite element method and its application to structural analysis, to the study of stresses due to water flow, and to the analysis of the rock masses. Finally, the design models generally used in the study of tunnels are referred to, and some instances of application are given.
