The importance of tunnel construction in Portugal is corroborated by figures given in the report of the OCDE conference on Tunnels held in Washington in 1970. The Portuguese version of the Recomendations of that conference is given in this paper. A list of Portuguese bibliography on tunnels, as well as a list of research subjects concerning tunnel construction that are being or will soon be investigated at LNEC are presented and discussed herein. Reference made to the first meeting of the International Association on Tunnels in Oslo, April 1974, particularly as concerns the nature of organizations that in each country coordinate information. Lastly consideration is given to the aspect of protection of this country's interests as regards foreign technological cooperation. The author suggests the strengthening of the country's technological structure in order to build up that protection.
