A brief description of the present state of art of undisturbed sampling is presented. The fundamental studies carried out by the lnternational Group on Soil Sampling are commented. The systematic classification prepared as a basis for the specification DIN-4021 is reviewed, as well as the studies performed in order to assess, in quantitative terms, the disturbance associated with sampling operations and the means of avoiding or allowing for the disturbance effects.
