The paper presents a technique of computation, using finite elements, for the design of piles subjected to lateral loads. The pile and the surrounding soil is divided in finite axi-simetric elements of triangular cross-section. The soil is considered as unable to resist tension forces and with elastic behaviour for compression forces.
Results of test performed in actual piles surrounded by multi-layered soil are compared with computed results obtained using the proposed method. These results are also compared with computed results obtained by conventional methods. The agreement between the observed results and the computed results obtained by the method presented in the paper is very good.
