Remarks on the behaviour of earth dams under the action of earthquakes

Abstract

The principal methods for calculating the stability of earth dams with regard to earthquake actions are briefly described. Particular attention is paid to the method proposed by Newmark, and a new formulation is presented, which, based on the rheologic characteristics of the material that constitutes the dam, points out the way to compute the residual displacements of a dam.
