Excavations of the foundations of the Castanhão Dam revealed a canyon along the Jaguaribe river, filled with sands of medium to low relative density. Construction of the dam over this foundation, including the canyon, was simulated in incremental, piece-wise linear elastic 3D FEM analyses. Analyses confirmed that the softer materials in the canyon led to increased differential settlements of the dam, but with low risk of tension cracks developing. Stress redistribution led, however, to an increase in the liquefaction potential and a decrease of the safety factor of the deeper critical circles.
