Performance and conception of underground structures subjected to seismic actions: a review

The design of underground structures usually does not consider the seismic component, even in regions of high seismicity. A literature revue is presented in this work, which includes the analysis of damage mechanisms, conclusions drawn from seismic performance observations, seismic response of tunnels and illustration of typical support damage. Since the conception plays a very important role in the final quality of the project, design concepts are reviewed. The philosophy presented in the European code for seismic regions, design steps, recommendations and good practice rules, as well as simple expressions to estimate the concentrations of stresses in the cross-section, are also included.
