Abstract

Created in the 90's decade, this discipline claims to include the principies and methods of Soil and Rock Mechanics, by focusing its applications on the physical environment management with its corresponding ecological interactions and particularly their effects on the quality of hwnan life. The engineering problems which concern most Environmental Geotechnics specialists are, besides those related to land use planning, traditional works and mineral resources exploitation (regarding their environmental implications, under new strict regulations), the recently created fields of activity that deal with solid, liquid and gaseous waste management, as well as certain contributions to the solution of global problems, such as the greenhouse effect, the extinction of species and the excessive population growth. Simultaneously with the formulation of a holistic approach to these problems, Environmental Geotechnics aims to put in perspective integrative concepts of relevant interdisciplinary interest as, among others, the generalised (ecological and geotechnical) ground stability and the rational defence against natural hazards, which may lead to new engineering solutions, thus developing the applications of this field of knowledge.
