Abstract

Several sites were chosen to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the granitic residual soil from Covilhã: the football playground of the "Associação Desportiva da Estação" (AD.E.); the football playground of the "Câmara Municipal da Covilhã"; and the site of "Santo António". ln these sites it was carried out a geotechnical characterisation, "in-situ" tests and collected disturbed and intact samples. With the samples collected it was performed a laboratory classification ofthe soil, and carried out odometer tests, shear box tests, and triaxial tests. Trough the laboratory tests it was determined: the compressibility behaviour of the soil; the shear strength parameters of the soil; and the stress-strain behaviour of the soil. It was identified two yield surfaces from changes of the stiffuess in the relations stress-strain of the soil, as a result of the rupture of the interparticle cement bonding that exists in this type of granitic soils. Toe effect of suction on the behaviour of this soil was also discussed.
