Abstract

The Eurocode system is presented with particular emphasis on the code concerning the geotechnical structures. After a reference to the limit states concept, the partial safety factors and the characteristic values of the mechanical parameters, the procedures for safety evaluation are described and exemplified through straightforward examples. The problem of quantifying the partial safety factors, namely using reliability theory, is then dealt with. Dimensioning of spread foundations of different sizes on different soil types is acomplished through the use of the traditional method as well as the Eurocode. Corresponding nominal probabilities of failure are also calculated. The comparision of the obtained results enables a judgement regarding the fairness of the suggested values for the partial safety factors. Consequences for the design resulting from the verifications regarding serviceability limit states are discussed. Finally some proposals concerning the elaboration of the national document of application and the future revision of the code are envisaged.
