Soil Nailing in Support of Excavations

It is described a technique of support for excavations, based on the concept of soil reinforcement. This paper presents a composed failure mechanism of two bodies and proposes a method of overall stability analysis by considering the sliding of a trapezoidal reinforced earth body, assumed as a gravity retaining wall, subjected to the active failure wedge and to the axial and shear forces of the nails where crossing the slip surface. Are given some indications related to design, in particular on the soil-nail friction, and two examples of stability calculation. Finally are presented the advantages and scope of application of nailed-retaining walls.
