Preliminary data for the morphology knowledge of the Kalahari base sediments in Baixo Cunene area (Angola)

This paper presents the results of the geophysical survey carried out by LNEC in Angola from 1962 to 1966 at the area called Baixo Cunene (Kalahari). ln the final report on the geophysical survey the performance of a exploration by means of boreholes was recommended in order to appraise the interpretation of geophysical results and provide geological data for a more correct interpretation of these results. The knowledge obtained from the meanwhile performed some mechanical surveys shows the necessity to carry out more drill holes since the defined geoelectrical bedrock does not correspond to the base bedrock of the Kalahari sediments in the neighbourhood of Môngua site. On the other hand, the morphology defined by the geophysical exploration suggests the existence of fossile valleys, the most important one probably representing the former bed of the river Cunene when it ran to the Etosha depression, in Namíbia.
