Abstract

The development of discrete element  models, based on discontinuum idealisations, has allowed the treatment of a wide class of geomechanical problems. ln the paper, the state-of-the-art of these numerical modelling techniques is presented. The main formulation and implementation topics are briefly discussed, and recent works in soil and rock mechanics, including fracture analysis, are presented to illustrate lhe current capabilities of discrete elements. Finally, future trends are discussed, both from a research point ofview, and in terms of their application to geotechnical problems.
