Abstract

The use of hydraulically bound mixtures, most commonly using cement, is a practice in constructing semi-rigid pavements promoting the more sustainable use of local resources, especially when the availability of materials is limited. The main and innovative objective is of the paper is the direct analysis of the influence of cracking on the structural response of semi-rigid pavements composed of a layer of soil treated by cement and, consequently, on their design. Based on a numerical modelling by the finite element method, through the ADINA software, two pavement structures with equivalent bearing capacity were studied, but characterized by the difference in thickness of the upper bituminous layer, reflecting different design methodologies. The numerical analysis showed that the thickness of the bituminous layer and the existence of cracks could influence the stresses and strains in the pavement structure. Consequently, it leads to a significant reduction in the lifespan of the pavement.
