If there are questions that remain open, they are surely related to our ability to measure, quantify, or qualify the concept of sustainable development, or to assess the real impacts of the dematerialization of our society. The relativity of these concepts, the scarcity of data, and other dilemmas make indicators a complex tool but with enormous potential to operationalize, evaluate, and monitor the evolving trends of our society. What advantages can indicators bring? What are their limitations? What dilemmas do they entail? Which path do they point us towards? Can we affirm that we are moving towards an increasingly sustainable global development model? And what have been the real impacts of dematerialization? These are some of the questions this article seeks to analyze.
