The History of Radioactive Mineral Exploitation in Portugal
Radioactivity is often associated with granitic regions, and in Portugal, it is in the central zone that geological conditions favorable to the formation of large deposits of radioactive ore are found.
Particularly in the districts of Viseu and Guarda, more than 60 mines were concentrated for the extraction of radioactive minerals: initially radium and later uranium.
