Abstract

The main objective of this article is to enumerate a set of international initiatives for the sustainable growth of Nations, with a special focus on programs to encourage the sustainable development of Cities. Think global and act local is the motto that leads to the sustainable, green, smart, creative, and circular city. The different incentive programs and performance evaluation methodologies are distinguished in the components that are most valued. It is concluded that incentive programs rarely follow the holistic desideratum of the UN SDGs in the social-economic-environmental trilogy and that the “green”, “smart”, “creative” and “circular” designs are dimensions of sustainability, but with purposes that tend towards the particularization of impacts on the environment or the economy.
