The relationship between transport and territorial planning is an unavoidable reality, not only because territorial plans must carefully balance all sectoral interests — with transport-related interests being fundamentally important among them — but also because it is impossible to discuss territorial planning, especially urban planning, without addressing transport issues. On one hand, the choices made in urban plans have a particular influence on (and indeed demand) specific policy decisions in transport; on the other hand, transport policy and the options adopted therein (such as models based on accessibility and mobility) constitute a crucial pathway toward making cities more sustainable.
