Integrated coastal zone management gained particular momentum following the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Conference on Environment and Sustainable Development, whose Agenda 21 includes as one of its priority actions the “integrated and sustainable planning of coastal and marine areas.”
This text focuses on the “Community Strategy for the Integrated Management of Europe’s Coastal Zones” and on Recommendation 2002/413/EC concerning the application of integrated coastal zone management in Europe, providing an overall view of the issues they raise.
