Where the Land Ends and the Sea Begins: Tourism Territories and (Un)Sustainability

Coastal development and metropolitan polarization shape the fundamental features of tourism geography in Portugal, arising from the national specialization in coastal tourism (sun, beach, and sea). This concentration geography is further reinforced as tourism occupies limited sections of the coastal zone—precisely those that, due to their exceptional qualities and values, are the most sensitive—requiring the adoption of integrated management measures for coastal destinations in Portugal.
