With an area of 482.03 ha, the Paúl de Arzila hosts six types of habitats (bog, marsh, riparian vegetation, swamp, canal, and floodplain), 47 plant species, and 42 animal species, of which 33 are birds. The protection of birds is of particularly high international importance, as "in the case of wild bird conservation (...) the management of the common heritage is entrusted, within their territory, to the respective Member States."
