The consumerism of goods, aimed at satisfying needs that are not always real or properly prioritised, leads us to the production of waste in uncontrollable quantities. This waste is either non-recyclable, or, when it could be recycled, it often is not — allowing dumps such as this one to continue to exist.
This is the so-called “Cegonheira dump”, located in the parish of Taveiro, municipality of Coimbra.
Since the 1980s, around 200 tonnes of waste have been dumped here every day, originating from seven neighbouring municipalities.
