The Triumphal Machine: The Importance of the Typewriter in Fernando Pessoa's Heteronymic Proliferation

The typewriter makes a significant difference between the literary practices of the modernists and the pre-modernists. The case of Fernando Pessoa/Álvaro de Campos provides us with a perfect example. In the creation of the famous “Day of Triumph”, Pessoa reveals that Ode Triunfal, by Campos, was written “at the typewriter”. To what extent should we be concerned with the “effect” of the typewriter when analyzing the art of Pessoa/Campos? Our work aims to reflect upon this issue through a comparative reading of the poetry of Caeiro and Campos.
