Teaching digital literature and historical memory in the Spanish as a foreign language classroom based on ‘The poem that crossed the Atlantic’ (2019) by María Mencía

This work seeks to present a didactic proposal for teaching electronic literature and historical memory in the Spanish as a second language classroom at a university level by reading the piece of electronic literature El poema que cruzó el Atlántico (2019), written by the Spanish-British author María Mencía. This didactic experience aims to include comprehensively the teaching of digital literature as a part of current literature. Besides, it also points out the problems students that have been considered “digital natives” face when reading critically digital texts that require digital literacy competences which are not taught in the current university curricula. The results of the application of this proposal are shown as well as the benefits of using digital literature in the classroom given its ludic, interactive and intermedial character.
