Abstract

Despite the recurring debates about the need to direct the gaze of everyday society towards practices that guarantee human rights in peripheral regions such as Brazilian favelas, the subject tending to have less space in the mainstream press will be deepened. On the other hand, mechanisms for strengthening citizenship can be observed in initiatives in local initiatives such as the “Voice of Communication Communities” (VOZ) as a strategic process and instrument for other rights such as security, basic sanitation, health and education. Part of a research on Communication for Social Change (ROGERS, 1974; MELKOTE, 2018), this work aims to reflect on the performance of "VOZ since", which emerged as a school newspaper in 2005, in Rio de Janeiro, and then impact nationally and internationally. Their learning and experiences taken seriously to other institutions, from the violence in the country, to fostering the construction of citizenship, the reduction of social awareness indices in favor of the economy, indices of improvement in the quality of life and public debate in favor of policies and social changes for localities.
