The objective of this paper is to understand the challenges that the Portuguese press faced at the end of the New State, by exploring the demand factor. After a theoretical framework in the field of media economics, it tries to contextualize the consumption of the press, relating it to the economic and social backwardness of the country in relation to Western Europe and North America.
