In this interview, conducted by Gonçalo Marcelo and Maria Luísa Portocarrero, Daniel Frey, who is a Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the University of Strasbourg and President of the Scientific Council of the Fonds Ricoeur, presents some core aspects of his philosophical research, his intellectual development and the activities undertaken by the Fonds Ricoeur. Daniel Frey puts forward his hermeneutical theory of reading, drawing from Gadamer and Ricoeur, showing the specificity of the hermeneutical approach to reading. In this interview, he also unpacks the importance of the philosophy of the young Ricoeur of the 1950s‑1960s, and the evolution of the relation between philosophy and religion for Ricoeur. Offering a brief glimpse on the status of the works that become “classics” and of the recent projects of the Fonds Ricoeur, such as the digitalization of Ricoeur’s archives, Daniel Frey’s interview shows us the extent to which Ricoeur’s work is today open to new readings and interpretations.
