It is not surprising to find, among the references that accompany Bruce Bégout's vigorous and subtle reflection on the concept ambiance, a section devoted to Maine de Biran's contribution. According to Bégout, it is Maine de Biran's meticulous analyses of affectivity that deserve consideration in the context of the contemporary debate on atmospheres. However, Bégout's assessment in this context remains critical of Biran's approach. In this text, I would like to discuss this specific point and argue that, within the framework of Biranism, the theme of atmospheres is not easy to situate.
