Abstract

In the last few decades we could witness a great amount of deep-reaching social changes, that have a direct impact on the definition of the identity, structure and functions of contemporary Universities. This radical change in perspective, the fast pace at which the change is happening, and the depth of the transformations involved, lead to ponder whether this is a new stage in the evolution of Universities -as Higher Education institutions-, or if it is rather a paradigm shift that will eventually destroy the learning place that was usually understood as a University, by converting this institution it into something different. In this paper I will try to: (a) Remember how Universities first appeared in the Middle Ages (b) Point out the main steps of the evolution of Universities (c) Analyze some features that characterize contemporary Universities (d) Find out if there is any hope for this institution in the future, or it is called to disappear, due to the economic and market necessities of the present age.
