Abstract

Clinical work in psychoanalysis carried out with low-income communities is a new field in both work and research and, at least in Brazil, the endeavor has been accused of being ineffective for poorer sectors of the population. One of its most exciting challenge is the role played by the Brazilian reality, marked by a huge social apartheid. This paper aims to discuss the psychoanalytic treatment with low-income populations, focusing at the inseparability between the singular and the universal, here thematized as a cornerstone of our clinical device in the search for understanding psychological distress. We will also show how psychoanalysis does truly provide appropriate tools for establishing such a multidisciplinary approach.
