Abstract

Sebastião da Gama (+1952) was a Portuguese poet and writer who also became famous as a pedagogue in the book he wrote about his teaching daily life entitled ‘Diário’ (Diary). Reading this book can still be useful to teachers, particularly nowadays when the pedagogical relationship seems to be not easy. His (positive) pedagogy is centred on the teacher respect and love for the student, in search of happiness. Thus, he points out as teachers’ qualities: to love students, to be creative, respectful, and cheerful. This is reflected upon teaching and evaluation. Discipline is also centred on the student and punishment is only applied as a last resort. To conclude, it is about a vital pedagogy that believes in the student and aims at transforming the class into a social event and a ‘party’, without neglecting the learning process.
