Abstract

The academics are an important constituent group in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), given the importance of their role in achieving the institutions’ objectives. The central role of the academic staff makes them sculptors of the academic and institutional culture with implications for the quality of the institution and student success. There are many factors that contribute to undermine the commitment of academics towards their institutions and their careers. Job satisfaction is important to the revitalization of motivation of academics and to keep alive their enthusiasm. There are known several international studies on this topic, however very little is known in the context of higher education in Portugal. This paper refers to an ongoing study, funded by FCT, which focuses on the satisfaction and motivation of the academic staff of HEIs in Portugal.
