Abstract

This essay intends to study the environmental and social-economical dynamics of the ecosystem of Aveiro’s lagoon during the XVIII century, with a special focus on the experience, extension and consequences of the 1755 earthquake.

One of the most renowned historical sources about this catastrophe is the 1756 Inquiry, ordered by the Marquis of Pombal. Bearing in mind the goals of this essay, we have studied the existing documents that refer to the geographical space of Aveiro’s lagoon, written between April and May 1756, using as well, when necessary, the 1758 General Inquiry. The data we have thus collected were converted into thematic maps and analyzed.
