Abstract

Catastrophic floods in Madeira Island are known by "aluviões". The aim of this article is to introduce the most important ones in the XIXth and XXth centuries as well as the atmospheric conditions in their origin. Analysing Iand use that makes easy their occurrence, it is possible to know some elements to minimize their effects.
