In this study, we present a contribution to assess the importance that the Portuguese central maritime belt had in the Modern Period. After a brief characterization of the archaeological and historical context of the territory of the current municipality of Figueira da Foz, the Dutch corsair attack to Buarcos in 1629 is analyzed. Although some sources and studies on the defensive aspects of Buarcos are known, much remains to be investigated, as evidenced by the little-known or even unpublished relevant sources presented here, which allow a new reading of a lesser-known episode in local history and a confrontation of points of view. The methodology of this investigation was centered on a cross analysis of information, relating different sources, in a micro-history approach.
