Studies on Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves (Macau, 1813-1841) refer to his contributions to Chinese and Portuguese language pedagogy, but there is one part of his work that usually doesn't have the deserved prominence: the affirmation of Latin as a mediating language in cultural dialogue.
Works such as Lexicon Manuale Latino Sinicum (1839), Lexicon Magnum Latino-Sinicum (1841), and Grammatica Latina ad usum Sinensium (1828) are rarely mentioned.
Those books underline two things on which this paper aims to reflect: a) the importance of Latin in Macau in the middle of the 19th century; b) the usefulness of Latin in intercultural dialogue.
This paper analyzes the characteristics of the three works and draws attention to their importance in the context of the dialogue of cultures and the history of translation in Macau
