Abstract

In this article we address the relationship between freedom of expression and literary creation in Portugal, especially in the period before and after 25 April 1974, not forgetting to problematise some points of view on how the Revolution, affected portuguese literary production and frustrated, to a certain extent, expectations that unpublished works because of censorship would be published. In addition, we consider how writers resisted censorship during the Estado Novo and how, in both cases, although using different procedures, literature served as a weapon in the ideological and sociocultural struggle. We also highlight the complexity of the reactions to the newly won freedom.
