By analysing unpublished documents stored in the Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra and the Archivio Segreto Vaticano, the study aims to (re)consider Agostinho Barbosa (1590-1649), an erudite canonist who graduated from the University of Coimbra (1608-1618), and part of his vast Latin editorial production. These erudite lexicographical and legal texts often gave rise to slanderous statements that have also been passed on by historians who recently studied this complex figure. Barbosa was a jurist who lived between the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, during decades of inner social collapse in Portugal, in the time of the political union between the Portuguese and Spanish crowns.
