The foundation of the current city of Huelva, and its subsequent development, has always been linked to the sea due to its condition as a natural port. This has contributed to making it stand out from other inhabited centers in the immediate environment due to its status as a cosmopolitan city, as there has been a frequent presence in the port of sailors and merchants from all over the known world at all times. In protohistoric and Roman times, the Huelva estuary was shaped like a wide gulf or inlet, where the waves could break at the foot of a small peninsula - the Cabezos de Huelva - which was located between the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Research into the Roman period, Onoba Aestuaria, has seen remarkable development in the last two decades, with particularly significant advances in the urban structure and the port.
