The paper presents some results of the program Peindre en France à la Renaissance begun at the University of Geneva since 2010 and, particularly, the 6th volume of the series: Peindre à Rouen au XVIe siècle. In order to understand the context of the formation of the sculptor Jean de Rouen, it focuses on the production during the first quarter of the 16th century through two phenomenons: on one hand, the local tradition, illustrated by the Le Vieil family; on the other, the Netherlandish strand, represented by Arnoult de Nimègue.
