The archaeological site of São Pedro (Redondo, Alentejo), occupied between the end of the 4th and most of the 3rd millennium BCE presents a wide set of ceramic containers with diversified morphological, metric and technological characteristics. This paper focuses on the techniques of surface treatment of ceramic containers, more concretely in the application of engobes and washes of red hue.
With this reflection we intend to value the aesthetic and symbolic meaning of the red color in the material culture of the Late Neolithic / Chalcolithic communities in the peninsular Southwest, since it is a topic that has not been approached in the most recent archaeological works.
