Among documented works and others attributed to João de Ruão, the Machado de Castro National Museum has, in its custody, a very significant number of his extensive artistic production. With different origins, almost all from Coimbra and its region, the pieces present various types, from the singular and colossal architectural construction of the so-called “Capela do Tesoureiro”, to several single large sculptures, and sculpted relief sets, inserted in both small and large altarpieces. Over more than one hundred years, and according to different museographic conceptions, the Museum has transformed itself, based on the work of João de Ruão, into the true “home” of Renaissance sculpture in Portugal.
