Deciphering the meaning of Norman sculpture between 1480 and 1530, exactly the time preceding Jehan de Rouen's stay in Coimbra, is the main objective of this analysis. Finding the links between the sculptural plasticity of a territory permeated by the presence of Italian models and artists, and the production of Jean the Rouen in Portugal is a challenge that urges for new perspectives of interpretation. The origins of the French sculptor, his references and his initial training are considered here in order to establish a clearer network of artistic work and its ability to cross political boundaries in the 16th century.
