The confraternities of Mercy [Misericórdias] were, in the domain of their activity, important promoters of different patrimonial manifestations. These works of art were integrated in the dominant aesthetic currents and registered influences of the art produced locally; according to the economic power and cultural enlightenment of its leaders, the most important artists of each period and geographic area were privileged. In this context, an attempt will be made to analyze the role of João de Ruão in the context of the artistic production of the Misericórdias, which is embodied in three dimensions: in his own works, in interventions of an architectural and sculptural character, which some authors consider as the origin of certain specificities existing in the Houses of Mercy, and those performed by his disciples and dynasty.
