Using a didactic-based approach to history and to the theory of historiography, this study aims at analysing the correlation between historiography, the teaching of history and education for democratic citizenship in Portugal, since 1991, which promotes an integrated/
/sustainable development. The study characterises the way in which the political system, the State apparatus and social society individualities/ organisations in Portugal have sought to shape the aforementioned correlation. An alternative (partial) way of structuring the involvement of non-higher education in history in education for a democratic citizenship and promoter of integrated//sustainable development is also explained and justified.
