Design method for road surface thickness of earth roads

In Brazil, a large extent of the road network, 79.9% of the total, consists of unpaved tracks – “low cost roads”. A significant amount of the public budget for road management resources is used in the routine maintenance of these roads after rain periods. However, these high costs can be minimized by constructing a bearing surface with low cost investments, but resistant to regional weather actions, sometime stormy, as well as to the actions induced by traffic. The purpose of this work is to present the design method developed by the Local Transportation Assistance Program of South Dakota – USA, for determining the thickness of the primary coating of earth roads, and to adapt it to the Brazilian territory. Based on this method, besides obtaining a significant cost reduction in the construction of these road infrastructures, the designer can estimate with confidence the ideal timing for repair operations, during the road life cycle, giving priority to durability and reducing of the cost of maintenance.
