Abstract

Liquefaction of saturated sands is a serious threat to structures built on shallow foundations in seismically active regions. The implementation of performance-based design in these cases is affected by a poor understanding on the mechanisms related to the development, magnitude of the effects and mitigation of earthquake-induced liquefaction, which were investigated as part of a research project combining experimental and numerical techniques. This paper concentrates on the experimental component of the research based on centrifuge modelling, the use of this technique for investigation of liquefaction problems being described. Some of the experimental observations and preliminary conclusions are presented. Both the most important characte ristics of the soil-structure system behaviour when the soil liquefies and those determining the performance of densification as a liquefaction resistance measure are considered.
