The role of structural geology in the major landslides on the A7 motorway in Granada

We often study large landslides as a mass that moves independently of the regional geological conditions of the surrounding area, but these conditions are an important factor in the genesis of large slope movements. The construction of the A-7 motorway on the coast of Granada has been very complex due to the particular tectonic, lithological, and orographic characteristics of the area. In this area of the Baetic mountain ranges, the natural slopes are very steep, and the heterogeneity, structure, and resistant characteristics of the materials have led to the appearance of certain pathologies related to large-scale landslides. The structural geology of this area is characterized by a large number of thrust sheets in a very small area. The north-south collision of the Alboran and Iberian plates caused the uplift of metamorphic and sedimentary materials. This collision of plates led to the formation of the Baetic mountain ranges with the Sierra Nevada massif and the Guadalquivir basin. This article shows examples of large slope instability movements and their relationship with the structural geology of the area.
