This article discusses the literal meaning of two stanzas in Os Lusíadas by Camões. It questions whether the versions traditionally offered by editors are correct or whether small textual corrections should be admitted. The first (Canto II, stanza 75) concerns the use of infinitive; the second (Canto IX, stanza 70) involves punctuation. The analysis of each passage includes discussions of grammar and semantics. Dictionaries and other passages by Camões were consulted. Regarding the passage from Canto II, the article concludes that no emendation is necessary. Although it does not offer an original reading of Camões’s poem, the study records the steps which were undertaken to reach such conclusion, clarifying certain issues of Portuguese grammar, and documenting Camões’ use of language. The passage from Canto IX, on the other hand, should be re-punctuated slightly. Certain editors may have misread this passage and the study solves a small textual problem in a satisfactory way. The discussion of two passages and the comparison of a number of contemporary editions, which scarcely differ from each other in their rendering of the text, also leads to a broader question: does Os Lusíadas needs to be re-edited today? The study, whilst modest, should be of interest to scholars and to enthusiasts of Portuguese language and of Camões’ poetry, who might then reflect on linguistic aspects which would not otherwise occur to them. It also invites a healthy reflection on the role and need for new editions of Os Lusíadas.
